What is addiction?
If you have an addiction, then you are certainly not alone. According to the charity Action on Addiction, 1 in 3 people are addicted to something. An addiction is described as not being in control of doing, taking, or using something that has a negative impact on a person or the people around them. Addiction can be chronic and/or relapsing with many manifestations such as Alcohol, Illegal Drugs, Prescription and over the counter medication, Social media, Shopping, Gambling, Gaming. The list is none exhaustive but what is important to remember is that if the behaviour causes a negative impact in the person’s life, yet they continue with the behaviour.
Drug addiction, also called substance use disorder, affects the persons behaviour which leads to an inability to control the use of a legal or illegal drug or medication. Substances such as alcohol, marijuana and nicotine are also considered drugs. When you are addicted, you may continue using the drug despite the harm it causes.
Alcohol addiction, also known as alcoholism, affects people of all walks of life. Experts have tried to pinpoint factors like genetics, sex, race, or socioeconomics that may predispose someone to alcohol addiction, but it has no single cause. Psychological, genetic, and behavioural factors can be contributing elements.
